Thank you for this. I have to admit I too have resorted to the “you don’t understand” argument sometimes and, as you point out, it really is overused. The left too often permits itself to be be cowered by the contention that we don’t get “real” people, which is baloney. During the primary some journalists early on accused Bernie (fatuously) of just being a “college-town” candidate, and I thought, well, what’s wrong with that? College-town people have kids, vote, go through the same ups and downs of life as anyone else. They’re not insulated. Bravo for calling out this argument.
