I dig--I think in the very early days there was more openness toward atheism. Journalist Jack Alexander wrote that one's Higher Power could even be "mathemetical infinity." Here is passage from his 1941 article: "Any concept of Higher Power is acceptable. A skeptic or agnostic may choose to think of his Inner Self, the miracle of growth, a tree, man’s wonderment at the physical universe, the structure of the atom, or mere mathematical infinity."
